The history and sights were wonderful, the days were adjusted to suit, meaning we were up early every morning for tours which left at 6.30 am arriving back just after lunch when we had a nap and then went to the terrace for afternoon tea under the fans. Stayed at the Sheraton which was very good, but as it was a good few years ago there are probably bigger and better now, but the views of the Nile from our room were fantastic.
Only thing was that it was not recommended that you went out at night, so always had to eat at one of the Hotel restaurants.

Don't know when ubasses stayed at the Sheraton and was told not to go out, we were there about 12 years ago and ate out every night, we had a rolling programme of loyalty discounts. It's a fair way out of Luxor, there are closer ones. Don't do a tour to the Son et Lumiere at the Temple, grab a taxi and do it yourself.
The Mena House is lovely for the Pyramids, they look to be in the grounds.
Unless you're used to the heat I would rethink August, it's intolerable.
Sadly I'm not sure I would go these days though which is so sad as everyone we met made us feel very welcome. The same applied to Tunisia and Morocco, off the list for a while

You can do a lot of things in summer in Egypt. Sail the Nile river, visit the pyramids, go camel riding with the kids. There is an amusement park in Cairo called the Dream Park. Roller coasters, Ferris wheels and arcade games are all made available to please your kids. To look for cheap hotels visit a website that compares other hotel websites like "Trivago". Spending money is all on you or on your budget mainly. On an average, your budget should be around $22.72 USD (131 LE) per day considering trips and food.

Old quarter ( Medhaf al qibti and Babylon)
Pyramids of course
Citadel and city of the dead
