Lovely Weekend

On our way back from a fruitful uni weekend. Birmingham uni was lovely, Manchester, she’s decided, won’t be one of her 5 UCAS choices, and Durham wasn’t what she thought it’d be, but she’ll still apply to them. The dining halls are putting her off.

The city itself is gobsmackingly gorgeous, but the cathedral. Wow! The trip was worthwhile just to see that.

Birmingham and Leeds, both of which we’ve already seen. Next week we visit UCL, and the following week, Cambridge.
My son was so much easier, he refused to move be away from home.

I love Durham, especially its older quirkier little colleges.

I wish it wasn’t so far away from where I live. It’s at least a 4 hour drive, and that’d be in the middle of the night.

Train might be cheaper and quicker if you book in advance. And Miss RR would undoubtedly qualify for a student railcard.

BM, if she goes to uni there, she’ll learn very quickly how to use the rail service. I won’t be making that drive very often. I pray she makes it to Cambridge, much easier for me to get to, and much cheaper too. Slim chance though.

My daughter went to UCL...I'd say she liked it well enough. Well, it WAS in London. ;-)

She wants to read History & Spanish, but, there’s only 20 places on offer at Cambridge.

UCL is an outstanding uni, but the accommodation costs are ridiculous, so she’d be better off staying at home. With that comes the awful commute. My son does it as he is at City uni. It drives him mad. About an hour and 20 each way, when sometimes he’s only going in for a 2 hour lecture.

Birmingham might have too many distractions... but it is a really friendly city

I'm trying to remember my daughter's halls of residence in her first year...eek! It's been too long. I know it was tiny. I think that as her dad and I were divorced, she put me down as the main parent...and I couldn't afford to contribute.
After that she shared with her mates...in some rather grotty places. *Shudder*

To be honest, I doubt she’d venture into the city too often. The campus is like a mini city and the accommodation is in beautiful parkland.

my goddaughter went to Durham to read Latin and was lodged in the Castle. She had a blast.....

She's now a lawyer in London pulling down a hell of a salary, Durham the foundation to this....age 32 and a house worth more than a couple of mill in Hampton - and she's the main bread-winner.

My daughter is 32...and still trying to save for something in London with her BF. They both have excellent salaries. They won't go elsewhere though.

my daughter is off to Leeds shortly to work the summer ahead of her course and we have taken an apartment right in the city centre, a studio, and it's amazing (Christ, we never got accommodation like this).

She gets it for a year's rent and it's 3k cheaper than being in a hall of residence where the cost only covers the academic year - yet there are over 40 students living in the block, a mixture of both Leeds and Beckett Universities and quite international apparently. Already there are FB intros flying around.

We were quite impressed with Leeds, but I think Birmingham just beats it to the post.
We’ll have a good reccy round UCL next week. Ultimately, if she wants to go there, we’ll find a way. I went back to work to help subsidise the kids uni expenses.
I quite like beans on toast.....
