We went four years ago - it's a heap :(
Major heap :-)
I was brought up there and it has become a bit of a satellite for London. We were down there just a few weeks ago as my family still live there
There are some nice places but I would avoid Sheerness M2/ A249

Where are you travelling from and do you have a specific reason for visiting fruitsalad

It's only a few miles from us in Herne Bay, been there once,
That really was enough.

Travelling from North London gg and just wanting to go somewhere different for a couple of days
It is a dump with very little to recommend it - pick another venue. Broadstairs is much nicer.
You could do a lot worse than visit Baldric's Herne Bay IMO. I revisited it a couple of years ago after a gap of over 70 years (lived there 1945-7) and found the seafront area a charming place.

Whitstable is OK.
Why is it a dump? (never been there - just wondering)
Isn't there a prison there??
I wouldn't even bother going that side if I was you. Go somewhere like West Wittering. Much nicer.
We were going to move to Whitstable, but we couldn't find a Doer-Upper big enough for what we wanted, so HB it is, working out well.
There used to be a large Royal Navy Dockyard and Army base there in the 50s which is when I first lived there They both closed and then a steelworks was built and that closed down Unemployment followed and the island suffered but is now coming back - slowly but trying The people are friendly and hard working

I think that there are 3 prisons there now

Sharon, you're thinking of

HM Prison Elmley is a local Category B/C men's prison, located close to the village of Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. The term 'local' means that this prison holds people on remand to the local courts.
Wiki.

Sounds more like Hayling Island you're talking about (just across the water from West Wittering).

If you do decide to go you will need the train from London Victoria to Sheerness-on-Sea. Takes 1 hour 33 minutes.
I went when I was supposed to be playing Katherine Swynford because she was from there and I think you can sometimes get a handle on real people by being in their area for a bit, but as has been said nothing useful unless you like a nice historic church because I did go to one but can't remember the name of it. Ultimately gained nothing useful from the visit and the film is on hold :/
