Could I really give up my job, sell my house (about 75k equity after debts) and retire to France? What could I buy? What would I do for a living? Or can I be self-sufficient? Do I need a reality-check?

Personally I wish you well but...Two of my friends/colleagues have explored the idea - both had saved up plenty of money and had loads of equity (like half a mill each). They both chose different areas of France. The one who chose a less attractive area gave up at the last minute having spent a good amount exploring it. The other one went thru with it and his relationship suffered cos the y had nothing to do all day. They now treat their "dream home" in France as a holiday home.
Although the financial side is important you still need to consider whether you can handle the language and cultural differences. Are you confident that you can integrate into a new town/village and overcome the problems in order to benefit from the beauty, climate, peace and serenity or whatever it is you seek there.
