which is the best value for money hotel to stay in around the ligurian coast, east of genoa?

I lived in Genova for a year. Cheapest hotels are near the main station Piazza Principe and very handy for the station! Some of those are booked out by the half hour, Aim for 3* and you'll be OK. East of Genova and you are looking more pricey (Avoid Nervi as its very expensive (unless your not paying - its lovely, I Iived there for 5 months)) You need to aim for the less touristy places if you want good value. i.e. not Portofino!!! Best stay in the city for the best price, it's only a few minutes by train to get into the rivierra

POrtofino would breakmost people's bank balances. Santa Margherita is just up the coast and very pleasant, as are Rapallo (especially) and Chiavari (but the shops are expensive so you won't save anything!). We flew to Genoa without any accomodation booked and lucked in to nice little hotels in all three towns - but having said that we had to move after a night or two because most places were so busy. Sorry - racked my brain but can't remember any names.
