Going To Liverpool
We are planning to visit Liverpool in Spring sometime. We are arriving by train from London, and as I hate driving it would be nice it I didn't have to at all. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where we should base ourselves ? Also things to do such as bus, boat and walking tours or anything that is a 'must do'

I took the Hop-on-hop-off City Bus Tour first as this also gives you a good idea of some places to visit - including the 2 famous cathedrals although I found these disappointing. The re-claimed Albert Dock area contains a lot of interest, and of course you must go to see The Three Graces* (best viewed from the Ferry Cross The Mersey - but the other side is a bit grotty). If you're into architecture, then the diverse collection in Liverpool is fascinating, although some of the modern stuff is a bit grim (personal opinion of course). Then there's a good view to be had from the Radio Tower even though it seems a bit rickety ! And if you're a Beatles fan then there is quite a bit to see - including the Beatles Experience at the Albert Dock which is chock full of 60s memories (and better IMO than the Beatles display in the modern Museum of Liverpool). The Maritime museum is of obvious interest to sea-faring visitors, and for a rather more sobering experience the Museum of International Slavery. Tate Liverpool well worth a visit if you're into Art, as also is the Walker Art Gallery. While on the subject of art, I took the train to Port Sunlight (a neat little garden "village") and visited the Lady Lever Art gallery - lots of Pre-Raphaelite stuff there. I also managed a day trip to Chester - a very attractive city offering much of interest. Lastly, I found the Scousers a very friendly folk, and very proud of their city.
*The Three Graces are the Liver Building, the Cunard building and the Dock Building, sited on the river bank (with the famous Liver Birds atop the first of these).

You'll be arriving at Lime street station, and if you want somewhere to stay close-by, I can recommend the Aachen Hotel....small, family-run, inexpensive and fantastic EAMAYL breakfasts. Just a third of a mile from the station and also the Philharmonic Hall and lots of bus routes near-by.

Liverpool is a FAB city. Go to both cathedrals buf also to St Luke's church known locally as the Bombed Out Church.
Two lovely eateries are Pho and Mowgli, both on Bold Street. Walker Art Gallery is a must. Are you booking a hotel? We always stay at The Hard Day's Night Hotel, its right on the corner of St John Street and Matthew Street...where the Cavern and lots of other bars are. It's a Beatles themed hotel, as you might have guessed and has a nice restaurant called Blake's. I'm not sure if the Duck Tours are still running but they're fun..... a bus which goes into the water. The Beatles Experience is good but can get very crowded. We hired a private taxi which was great, and took us to all The Beatles' houses, schools, places mentioned in their songs, penny lane, Strawberry Field, the Barber (shaves another customer) etc etc..... plus he took photos of both us. Liverpool Museum, well worth a visit! Have a great time, you'll be glad you went. x
