//The level of migration from the EU to the UK has been underestimated by the Office for National Statistics from the mid-2000s to 2016.

The ONS said the error affected the number of migrants from eight of the countries which joined the EU in 2004, including Poland.

It said it may have also overstated migration from non-EU countries.

As a result, the status of the immigration figures compiled by the ONS has been downgraded to "experimental".//

It all sounds a bit airy-fairy. I wonder how much these unreliable 'experiments' cost the country?

Seems some bod was roaming around Heathrow asking incomers how long they would stay and they based the immigration statistics on the answers he got. Honestly you just couldn't make it up! (Oh sorry - they did!)
Lies, damned lies, statistics and complete and utter fantasy at the public teat.

Lessons will be learned.

No they won't you lying sacks of.
Maybe those supermarket estimates were nearer. 80m+ people in the country.

In other words theyve been lying at the "request" of somebody in Whitehall...a phone call was made by a journalsit "hello is that blah blah, what have you got to say about this report weve been handed and are going to publish tomorrow outlining how youve been fiddling the stats blah blah"...

Hey presto, damage limitation dept goes into overdrive (works to 5pm one evening , does full day in other words) and a statement gets released on that Bastion of Biased Collusion of how such a mistake could have been made on such important data, blah blah...
