Dogs And Holidays

We have a very local, very lovely lady who looks after our dog in her own home whenever we need her too, if she isn’t already booked up.
He sleeps on her bed (he’s not even allowed upstairs in our house)is taken for lots of walks, and is generally spoilt to bits by her, he absolutely loves her and greets her like one of the family.
She will take two dogs at a time, three at a push if they all get on. There are a couple of dogs who have to be looked after by themselves due to being rather unsociable.
We much prefer her set up to the kennels we’ve had to use occasionally in the past, even though the kennels get very good reviews and we’ve been confident he’ll be well looked after and safe there.
What do you do with your dog during holiday or other times when he needs to be looked after elsewhere?

We now don't do holidays without the dog. Silly I know, but the only person that ever looks after her is my son (and his wife) and we have their dog if they go on holiday. We have now given up holidays overseas so only go on holidays to places where dogs are accepted. For weekends away and appointments, etc where we can't take her, my son has her. Fortunately, he often works from home.

We have kenneled dogs in the past, but I would rather do what you do and leave them with someone they love in a home setting. Our dog and three cats rule our lives, I suppose, but they enhance our lives.

We don't have any nearby family so Tilly always goes in the kennels when we go away. I hate taking her but she doesn't seem to mind and goes happily with the kennel staff when we take her in. They do send daily updates and photos of her when we're away and she seems to be quite happy.
I'd rather not have to put her in kennels and would love to have a local person to look after her in their own home.

I don't and almost never have. My dog is part of the family, all my dogs have been part of the family. We did it once some 30 years ago when my husband was offered a mind bogglingly good job in the USA. The plan was that after that he would take over management of the dutch office so no quarantine. so we put them in for 5 days to go over and find a house. so far so good...but then the dutch office closed down so we had to come home with our one remaining dog (one died out there) and he had to go into quarantine kennels. Never ever again ever.

Nowadays if the dogs can't come with us we don't go.

Where I go my dog goes. If that wasn't possible a friend would stay here with him. I haven't got one at the moment but have just applied to a rescue so watch this space.

Tilly it was. Every single decision we made, we made taking into account what would be best for the dogs and it all went horribly wrong. In hindsight of course.....

To diddly possibly for the same reason people arrange holidays around their children. They are much loved members of the family

We look after the daughter’s dog when they are on holiday. We also walk him and dog sit when they are at work so he is quite used to us.

People talk about separation anxiety regarding the dog but they don't mention separation anxiety regarding the owner.

We have never been on holiday without our dogs. If they aren’t welcome, we don’t go.
When I was admitted to hospital as an emergency some years ago they went to my in laws.

Whats a dogs role in your life? Is it to fill a gap? Or is a substitute child?

I only ever leave my dog with a dogsitter I trust implicity for part of a day if I have a theatre trip day out planned which includes a meal and drinks, but if I go on holiday, he comes with me. He LOVES the beach and water and I love watching him play.
