My biggest complaint about New York was the number of taxi drivers with poor English and an even worse sense of direction. Don't they have a Big Apple version of 'the knowledge'?
But the shop assistants were much more pleasant; false maybe, but even false interest in customers is better than no interest whatsoever.

as someone who works in the travel business and has to deal with new yorkers on a daily basis i would say londoners are friendlier.
you can have a laugh and a joke with them whereas the new yorkers are very demanding and mostly ( not all) unpleasant.
as for the scottish i agree that they are lovely to visit and very welcoming but don't outstay your welcome especially if you are english x
I would say that generally, Brits in NY will get friendly treatment just because Americans are suckers for British accents. They hear one and they melt.
