glossing disaster!!

i came home form holiday to find my brother had painted my banister the colour i had asked for but with white gloss. it was not drip but he put it on so thickly that it driped really badly and the surface had dried. it was then sanded down but the paint was still tacky underneath two days after and had smeared in some places. how can i get it off so its a smooth surface again before doing it myslef? help. fast!!

Well it seems to me that you can either wait a couple of weeks for it to get really hard/dry and then sand it down or else use paint stripper, take it all off down to the wood and start again.

paint stripper is an absolute nitemare to use, very messy and it can bubble up the next coat of paint you put on unless your very very careful.

i would wait until its thoroughly dry and machine sand it with a coarse paper and then a fine one.

I did our banister with paint stripper (nitrous something in a greem bottle) and whilkst it was messy, it was a lot easier to do than using a hot air gun.

To be fair it was paint that had been on many many years, and have now waxed it to great effect.

Heat Gun, glass paper and loads of elbow grease...the only way! Dont take the Nitromors route, its too damn messy.
