travel adapter for the US
Will an ordinary travel adapter be enough to use my hairdrier in the States, or do I need some sort of transformer gadget-y thing because of the difference in voltage?

You can buy a plug adaptor at the UK airport, they're cheap. The lower power 110 instead of 240 means your hairdryer will operate at lower power.
If you don't want to use a hotel hairdryer, and want a full power one, consider buying a hairdryer there. They're quite cheap (you can check prices on the web first), and will probably won't be much different costwise to buying a transformer. Plus you don't have to mess around with a plug adaptor and you don't have to carry the thing there.
