Hi,

I may not be posting in the right place here but I figured if you guys are into music then one of you must have an Ipod!

I THINK i am getting one for Christmas, the only thing is, I have no idea how they work!

I have a laptop with windows XP on it.

Where do you download music from? and is it easy? How much does it cost? For example, I would have asked for the Eminem greatest hits CD for Xmas, but I wasnt sure whether I would put the songs from there onto the Ipod or get it from somewhere else? I also want ONE tracy chapman song, not the whole album.

What about my CD collection? Can I choose certain songs from my CDs and get them on to the Ipod? Or are all my CDs now destined for a museum?

As you can see, I am completely useless and don't have a clue so any help would be great thanks.

I think through i-tunes you can buy individual songs for about 79p, although have never done that.

See here

I've got an Ipod that Mr Jules won with the Walkers crisps promotion in September. I have transferred my fav tracks from my cds onto it, plus I have put on whole albums. I haven't downloaded any music from itunes music store as they want payment card details even for the free song of the week and I am loathe to give them that info (maybe it's silly, but that's me). You can also download music from peer to peer (p2p) sites, these are free to download, but not legal

Over the years, I've had a few different iPods, so I'll see if I can answer your questions.

The simplest place to download from is indeed iTunes. Once you have your iPod, you need to load software onto your laptop. This will include the iTunes Music Store. When you are online, you can buy from the Music store and the tracks you buy will be saved to wherever you've defined as your default music directory.

From there, transferring music to your iPod is pretty straightforward (you can either add the song to a playlist or simply 'drag' it to the iPod icon you will see - obviously the iPod needs to be connected to your laptop!

Alternatively, if you don't want to pay 79p per track, you may want to check out www.allofmp3.com. Incredibly cheap (around 6p per track) - and you don't have to buy whole albums. Additionally, their database of music is huge.

I would avoid peer to peer services like the plague. Not only is it illegal to swap copyrighted material, it's also a great way to get spyware onto your machine. You really don't want that.

Your CD collection is certainly not redundant. When I got my first iPod, I 'ripped' my CDs to my hard drive. You put your CD into your CD reader, iTunes will recognise it (make sure you're connected to the Internet) and fill in the names of the tracks and artist.

You can then 'rip' the CD, which basically means 'copy it to your hard disk'.

The great thing about this is that you now have a permanent digitized version of your CDs. You don't have to rip all the tracks on a particular album either.

By the way, I'm guessing that the Tracy Chapman track is 'Fast Car' isn't it?

Ha ha ha - yes!!!

I knew that because I was in the same boat. Loved the single, bought the album and didn't listen to any of the other tracks more than twice.

Good luck with the iPod. I hope you actually get it for Christmas!!!
