not necessarily; I've been paid out for lost goods for which I no longer had receipts. But they'll probably want receipts for expensive goods (eg cameras), which is the sort of area where people have been known to try to pull fast ones. Old credit card statements might do as receipts if you still have them.

all insurance compnay will want to know the value of the items, and rougly when u purchased them to make a rough idea on how much they will pay u back,, u will not get the full value of all items as they will include depresiasion (spelt incorrectly i think) on all value of items,, with the airline they r limited to what they can give u, at the moment depending on were u were trvling to and from can make a difference in what they pay u.

if u have trvld from any EU country and the USA they should be going by the montreal convention which pays out more than the warsaw convention which is $20.00 per kg... the montreal will pay the value of suitcase and contents again with deprisiation involved but again the airline will need an approx value and evan prove of purchase of all items.

hope this helps u...

Another option would be to get estimates for the items you lost as opposed to receipts - you could even attach pages from a catalogue showing the items/prices, some insurers would consider this. and depreciate the value depending on how old they are.
Good luck
Note that there is a recent EU law which stipulates certain requirements/rights regarding the treatment of passengers by airlines when things go wrong on flights from/to EU airports, but don't expect it to be effective because the airlines are definitely trying to ignore them.

karl.... if u look at the EU law,,, it does not mention lost/damaged luggage... it is only on ur flight,,, and the EU law was only brought in for the no frils airlines like easy jet etc etc,,,, and the law stipulates what we (the airline) can and can not do,, now b4 the scedules airlines would bend over backwards and help and deal with u to the best that they would,, now they r just going by the law,, itstats we have to re book u on the next avlb flt,, that flt is usually our own,, b4 we would book u on any airline now we don't....

what do u want from us the airlines...???
