how long does it take to renew a passport - from i send off the form until i get it returned to me?

You fill in the appropriate sections and the forms are sent int he post for you to sign and return. Worked well for me when I last renewed.

In practice it <usually> takes less than the 3 weeks that the Passport Office aim to achieve, but it's not guaranteed.


You can pay extra for an expedited service.

Or you can go to one of the passport offices, queue and wait.
Go here http://www.ukpa.gov.uk/ click on 'apply online' at top right. This is OK assuming you hold a current valid passport and still look more or less the same in a photo. Fill in online and pay with credit card. They send you the from. You sign and attach new photos. They send your new passport. I did this in January and the whole thing took 5 days.
