A friend I've not seen for many years now, was a polyglot and used her skills professionally. Seemed to think they weren't valued much as far as additional income was concerned. I got the impression that it allowed one a greater chance to get a job offer if languages were needed, but employers were reluctant to pay more for the skill.
Maybe don't count on it bringing fame or fortune, but if you enjoy languages learn them for their own sake, and if it becomes handy, that's just 'icing on the cake'.
