Just returned from four days in Amsterdam - what an amazing city.

It is so happy and relaxed, and it has the sensible attitude to marijuana and prostitution, but that aside, its churches and museums, as well as its quality hotels and restraurants made it a wonderful place to visit.

Highly reccomended a visit if you can.

OK, I'll bite - what are 'the tome and the Bob'?

We like Amsterdam.   Its war history, which is preserved, is heartbreaking.

Rhymming slang dear boy!

It is, especially the Ann Frank museum.

To think that in a matter of weeks, the family would have been freed by the liberators, instead of being put on the very last train to Auchwitz.

Heartbreaking is exactly what it is.

Tom was used alot on The Bill for prostitutes (something like tomtart sweetheart.... prostitute

ok I bow to TTT's knowledge on cockney

Question Author

Thomas More what???

Why you have to be so oblique I have no idea!!

But in answer to your apparent references, I don't smoke anything, and I was with my wife and her cousin and her husband, so I guess I didn't go for anything else Amsterdam is known for.

We did go to the Red Light District, it is eye-opening, to say the least!

Thanks Bob - TTT, we cross-posted, but it's all clear now, thank you.

AH, tourists all head for the Ann Frank museum but there's so much more than that.

Indeed - we plan some return visits to explore further.

13:01, well you seemed to set great store by the availability of illegal drugs and prostitutes so I took that to be the focus of your post.

Tom is also rhyming slang for jewellry (Tom foolery).

Could never get on with Amsterdam. Been there a couple of times. Found it rather a dirty place. Parts away from the centre where the canals run through are very nice. But the popular areas - Dam Square and so on - left me cold. The stink of cannabis is everywhere and please don't get me started on the bikes. Frigging bikes come at you from all angles and they are chained together, up to ten deep, wherevery there are any railings. I'm always amused when I see pictures of the quaint little bridges crossing the canals. You see a couple of people strolling across the bridge or leaning over the railings to look down to the canal. Not a chance! Bikes are chained six deep across both sides of every bridge, forcing pedestrians into the narrow roadway. You wouldn't even know there was a canal under the bridge as you cannot get anywhere near the edge. Meanwhile, you need to keep your wits about you to avoid being wiped out by the traffic as you quickly negotiate your way down the middle of the road. 🚳

Leiden is a much nicer place altogether.

Amsterdam is lovely. Visited many years ago. Such a clean & friendly city.

Something wrong with your taker then.

I don't set 'great store' by the availability of things that I don't enjoy personally, I merely observe them as being there.

Potholing is 'available', but I have no urge to partake in that either.

Not the best experience for you then, NJ.  ;o)

It is, and the term used for a prostitute has a variety of origins, some suggest cockney rhyming slang, others suggest a 'tom' is uncontrollable, and others still say it is police term for a loud and unruly prostitute.
