I am going to Edinburgh for a weekend with my Stepmum, no car only our feet and public transport.

which part would you recommend old or new, princes st or royal mile.

I haven't been there since I was a child so not entirely sure of where to stay.

I think Princes Street is the Royal Mile.

You should be able to see both parts in a weekend. Or are you asking where best to stay overnight?

Just checked.  I've got that wrong so I've learnt something.   I'd go for the Royal Mile.

Royal Mile is different to Princess St, naomi- it runs from Castle to Grassmarket I think

Two different things Naomi.

Royal mile is old town and ends at the castle. Princes street is new town and has all the shops.

Both are worth a look, Helen, plenty of eateries in both.

Ah, crossed posts.

Princes Street and the Royal Mile are parallel, but totally separate. Princes Street has lovely gardens and a couple of great galleries on one side - and a lot of tacky and/or empty shops on the other. The Royal Mile has the castle, the Parliament, Holyroodhouse, the great Museum of Childhood, St Giles Cathedral...

Yes, I've realised that.  It's a while since I've been there.

Holyrood is lovely.

The Modern Art Galleries are a bus ride away, but they're in beautiful grounds. A lovely area to explore is Stockbridge - maybe a 30 minute walk from the city centre, but with plenty of bus services too. It has lots of little shops - delis, a famous cheese place, independent bakeries and cafes, a couple of great pubs and restaruants.

So does if on foot either place is good then?

brilliant thanks for your help everyone

Remember they have trams now .

RH, there are some  pretty steep parts between Princes Street and the Royal Mile, but if you walk the slightly longer way round (the ugly way as we call it!) you can avoid those.

The tram has one stop on Princes Street. It's fine if you're going to Leith or the airport, but not much good for exploring the city centre!

Royal Mile has more character - Princes Street not so great now (apart from the gardens), having lost many of its classy shops - a bus out to Morningside (good coffee shops and individual shops).  Bus to Stockbridge which  is nice with a Sunday market and not far from the Royal Botanic Gardens.  Lots of delis and antiques stores.  Enjoy😊

If the weather's nice you could take a trip to the beach/promenade at Portobello

i havent been for 20 years but we stayed in stockbridge and got the bus in when needed

Cramond Village (many buses from Princes Street) is nicer than Portobello which can get a bit riotous at weekends!

We arrive Sunday morning and leave Tuesday lunchtime so will probably do the castle, Johnny walker visitor centre, mooch round the shops, try and do the underground lanes and that's just to start with
