My printer is only printing every second line.  I've checked all usual things..alignment etc. I know it's a basic printer HP2700e but could it be the Notepad document I'm printing that's causing the issue. I don't have Word

Check that there's not a problem with the jets.  The 'official' way to do so varies greatly between different makes and models of printers but the following 'universal' method should work anyway:

Click the 'Start' button.
Search for 'Printers & scanners'.
Click on it.
Click on your printer.
Click on 'Printer properties'.
Click on 'Maintenance'.
Click on 'Nozzle check' (or similar).

If that doesn't help, open your Notepad document, then click 'File' and 'Page setup' to check that you've got 'A4' selected.  Assuming that you have, hit Ctrl-P but, before attempting to actually print, go into the printer settings to check that you've got A4 paper selected.

If you're still getting nowhere, try using a decent alternative to Microsoft Word, such as LibreOffice Writer (which is part of the free LibreOffice suite of programs).  Notepad is rubbish anyway!

As above, it's most likely a blocked jet.

I've got an Epson, which once every now and then prints badly.

This has two settings, one is clean jets, the second is called deep clean, I've only done that one once, and it warns you is does use a lot more ink on that setting.
