To enter Australia you will need both a passport AND a visa.

You will need a visa (or possibly an ETA Electronic Travel Authority depending on nationality, etc). For both you need a passport.

You won't get on the plane without a ticket! Unless you're in the hold luggage but its a bit cold and the air's a bit thin!
