I was there in 1990 and it cost over 38 for a cheeseburger, and,as soon as we sat down we were serenaded by these wandering musicians who also wanted paying, however we didnt discover this until after the perfomance. Dont even think about a Gondola ride unless you have recently won the Lottery
Venice is rightly a very beautiful city, but the nearer San Marco square you are the more expensive the prices are. If you wander around there are some very reasonable cafes etc.
was there for a few days in 2003 many of the restraunts had a tourist menus that ranged from 10 - 20 euros per person. some of the combinations seemed odd but the food was well cooked and tasty and good value for money. the water buses are a cheap way to travel especially if you get the ones that are for ?72 hour duration.
Hope you have a good time
