//Stalking victims will get "peace of mind" by being told the identity of their abusers under new government proposals, the minister for safeguarding has said.

Jess Phillips said the proposed "right to know" statutory guidance aims to tell victims the identity of their abuser at the earliest opportunity.

"It's the most important thing," she said.

"Currently victims might not be told who their stalker is - leaving them potentially walking past them on street without them knowing," she told the Today programme.

The change is part of the government's plans give more protection to victims of stalking in England and Wales - with Home Secretary Yvette Cooper pledging the government will use "every tool available" to take power away from abusers.

About one in five women aged 16 and over in England and Wales have been a victim of stalking at least once, external, official figures show.//

This has to be a good thing - doesn't it?

Yes, on the face of it.

But as always the devil will be in the detail.  Lets see what actually emerges.

I agree it has to be a good thing.

Good.

Perhaps it will encourage people to think twice before embarking on this sinister course of conduct.

That's got to be a good thing

It's a good thing of course but I thought in most cases the person knew who it was anyway. I mean aren't they usually an ex of some sort or at least someone they knew  that got over serious? I thought they bombarded them with communication so surely they know who they are.

PS there was a recent series, Baby reindeer, on this very well done. Apparently a true, if possibly exagerated, story.

The problem with these things is it all starts with good intentions but is then poorly executed.  I can quite see some 'innocents' getting named and rich guilty taking legal action and stopping it.  Plus who names and when and how?  And then would the victim have the right to broadcast it?

A lot to think about.

As long as it is after conviction. Arguably after charging, but that still risks naming the wrong person.

Probably, but it isn't always the case. With online anonymity you can be stalked by a stranger without knowing who they are. Even after police catch them they won't tell you who they are.

I can't seem to post a link, but Google Nicola Thorp for an example.

no they were discussing cases which hadnt got  to court so that the guilt-finding process devolves to er the Police

and yes I have been involved in allegations of stalking - even er on AB ! some cases score 10/10 for fantasy in my opinion - another was a debtor that I had a CCJ against

am I the only one to say " I think you should do such and such! and been greeted with a fullsome

Oh oh oh I am being harassed and stalked ! and no one will stick p for me  -  call the P;LICE ! scream sceeam scream

( standard ploy at work: er when I was at work)

No, it will be abused.

How do you think it could be abused Canary?

As already covered above, phoney victims

There can't be any phoney victims. We're talking about anonymous perpetrators that the police have caught but thus far can't/won't reveal their identity to the victim.

If you're thinking about false accusations of stalking, it's not possible. There has to be evidence.

there cant be phoney victims

oh yes there can ! ( panto season geddit?)

harassment is all about how the victim takes the words and NOT what the speaker intends

I said ( I am 75) to my evening teacher " you are looking divine today ma'am" and she said say that again and I will get you thrown off course

I  turned to another teacher  and asked was that a joke and  he said no

oops!  gottle of geer gottle of geer

yeah cant  sleep: I think  it is voraconazole

I endlessly tell of a debtor telling the  police I was harassing her - I did  have a CCJ- and flappy flappy eyelids and pouting  lips (*) they police swallowed it hook line and sinker.

so I was invited to refute what she said - -  ( under protest, this is NOT a statement of english  law, it is AB) which I managed to do . Someone laughably said on another thread, " and they go after the liar". They dont. They walk away shrugging their shoulders

(*) she was a pretty girl I have to say - but  inside, Lady MacBeth!
