There is a street behind the main canal bit with a few Thai restaurants on, I ate in one with a turquoise sign and it was delicious (sorry can't remember the name). Shopping is really good, and if you want the best ice cream sundae of your life go to to 'Australian'.
A really nice pub is In de Wildeman and it also has a no smoking room, really rare in Amsterdam. Wandering around is noce, floating flower market I think a must see. A very good website is www.ivebeenthere.co.uk it lists places around the world and people post tips of things to see and do.
I went in January for a weekend and loved it, have a great time!
We are also going to Amsterdam at the end of this month! One of us has been before ages ago, and loved Anne Franks house and Coster Diamonds! (take my advice, make sure you can get the ring off your finger before you put it on!!!) We're staying at the Terminus Hotel, we've no idea if it is good or what, but we are really looking forward to Amsterdam (for the tulips, of course!)
