Short story for young adults

Trying to find suthor / title for following short story - included in schoold collection in early 1970's but thik it more likely from 1950's:

Schoolboy on continental beach beach holiday with mother - father recently breaved? Schoolboy attempts to swim through underwater tunnel as local youths do: finally manages to swim through tunnel after almost drowning, heavy nosebleed etc (strong 're-birth' motif going on here)

Female author?

This was used a couple of years ago as part of the gcse syllabus and would probably be in a recent anthology if you can lay hands on one.I know the story but like you I cant remeber the title!Hope this is of some help or maybe you have a teaching friend!
