Off to Philly on Saturday 8th April for 10 days. Apart from the city what other highlights would you recommend in the state of Pennsylvania or thereabouts? We will have a hire car of course.

Spring will be well under way by that time so be sure to tour the Amish Country of eastern Pennsylvania (especailly Lancaster County: http://www.800padutch.com/ There are numerous historical sites to visit in Philadelphia, such as the Liberty Bell. Philadelphia was the original capital of the U.S. way back when, so there's lots to see in that respect. The Philadelphia Zoo is one of the world's finest. If you have the time don't miss the Gettysburg Civil War Battle site... it's about 2 hours drive time from Philadelphia. Welcome to the U.S.!

Agree with Clanad.

This time of the year will be great for visiting Gettysburg. Quiet enough to take it all in. An unassuming place but well worth the time, even if you're not a history buff. I tried to find a room on the night of July 4! What a wazzock!

In Lancaster county, try the towns of Bird in Hand and Intercourse (I kid ye not, but resist the obvious t-shirt souvenirs.) Pittsburgh is a decent city if you like museums. Carnegie University and the University of Pittsburgh mean it's not short on history and quality. Haven't been to Philly so can't comment.

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy. And enjoy the American folk. Best people in the world to get along with.
