EVERYTHING costs a lot in Paris!
If you're foolish enough to go to the wrong places you can pay a fortune for food and drink in Paris but there are also plenty of cheap places, especially around the student areas.

For loads of good quality cheap restaurants and cafes, head for the Latin Quarter. Take RER line B or C to St-Michele Notre-Dame or Metro Line 10 to Cluny La Sorbonne. If you explore the area around Rue de la Harpe and Rue St-Severin, you'll find lots of places where you can get a good three course meal for between 10 and 15 euros. (Roughly 7 to 10.50). That seems like good value to me - certainly better than almost anywhere in a UK tourist area - and the coffee is just as cheap as well!

Chris

Ten years ago a cup of tea near the Louvre cost me the equivalent of 5. I'd also heard of a colleague being charged 20 for a cup of coffee and a croque monsieur on the Left Bank.

C'est un vol organise!

There is always Macdonals where coffee is O.K and reasonable, and best to take a travel kettle and some tea bags and coffee for your hotel room so can make your own coffee, but saying this the coffee is good and nice to have a coffee and watch the sites of Paris, have a good time.
Its true.

Thanks all,

I've relayed the answers to my mum who'sjust going down the motorway, on her way now.

It all depends where you go. I remember being told that eating was wildly expensive in Paris but then found that there were streets of restaurants where you could get a good two course meal for the equivalent of 10 if you knew where to look!
Don't forget it costs even more if you sit outside.
It's exactly the same in Rome, some places we went were VERY expensive but we found a little restaraunt where we had a 3 course meal for 2 which came to about 30
