Yes, Cyprus is still in the late 20's. go to www.weather.com type in the country and you can look up monthly averages for the year.

Cyprus is part of Asia and the Canary Islands, although owned by Spain, are off the African coast!

The warmest European destinations in mid-October are, obviously, those furthest south. This means considering southern Spain, Gibraltar, southern Italy (especially Sicily) and southern Greee (especially Crete).

My own personal recommendation, however, is Malta. The second table, here, shows the average minimum and maximum temperatures for mid-October:

The top table shows that October is one of the wettest months in Malta but the rainfall tends to come in a few brief storms which pass very quickly. (They're often overnight anyway).

Cyprus part of Asia? I think not! Admittedly it's way in the east of the Med (Nicosia is actually east of Cairo, as is the mountain village in which we have a house) but it's definitely part of Europe. Very nice in October, though if it's been a particularly hot summer the landscape can be a bit parched. Southern Greece is pleasant at that time of year too - the Saronic Islands or the Peloponnese usually see temperatures in the low to mid 20s.

For Jno: Cyprus might well be in the EU but it's not in Europe!

Turkey is currently negotiating to join the EU but most of Turkey lies within Asia and it will still be in Asia if, and when, it joins the EU. Similarly, Morocco has made tentative moves towards joining the EU but it won't suddenly jump out of Africa if it joins!

A quick look around my bookshelves found 5 reference works that say Cyprus is in Asia (and none that say it's in Europe).

with respect, Chris, I think that - to date - being in the EU does mean you're European. Look at the fuss being made over Turkey's possible entry - mostly on the basis (sometimes unspoken) that it's not European, in geography, religion or culture. If it does ever join, I think it will be accepted as being the first non-European EU member. The same, only more so, will be the case if Morocco ever applies. No such qualms were ever mentioned over Cyprus's accession; the only doubts (well founded) were whether it would be obstructive toward Turkey. Thugh it is certainly sometimes classified as Middle Eastern/Eurasian, I believe it's more commonly accepted as part of the European cultural tradition: white, Christian, western. And it's good for October holidays too.

October is a funny month and can be stunning or awful - so best bet is wait for a last minute and keep an eye on the yahoo weather sites. Most of southern europe will be warm. Moving further out - Cyprus, Canaries, North Africa, Israel are probably better guaranteed. How about Maderia....!!

maimai, is that the same CIA that thought WMDs were in Iraq? But you're right, you won't get anything very warm north of the Med at that time of year, and it is possible that the weather will have broken in Cyprus as well. Keep an eye on north African resorts (Tunisia or Egypt perhaps).
