Bedsupper Club is trendy, as is Q Bar. However, pretty much anywhere is safe, and you should try a Mai Tai or two.

I recommend the Banyan tree as well. If you go there just before it gets dark, you can have a beer and watch the sun go down, and all the lights come on.
Heard good reports about Bed Supper Club, although never managed to get there.
The decent bars are not in one central part of Bangkok, they tend to be scattered across the whole city. It is best to move around by taxi / tuk-tuk if you want to visit more than one bar in the evening.
I have never had any problems with Bangkok. It is a very touristy city, and there is always lots of people around. I guess if you leave the crowds and go to other areas, then that might be a different issue.
