working with animals in africa

Hi..I want a career change and want to work with orphaned and endangered animals in africa. I have seen the sites where you pay about 1000 for 4 weeks of doing this. However, I want something more long term...and where I get a wage (although am not expecting a big one). anyone know someone who has managed this. I do not have an animal research degree or anything like that. Thanks
