Salvador Brazil

A colleague of mine was just thinking outloud about going on holiday to Salvador in Brazil and foolishly i've mentioned kidnappings and various other hazards of traveling to Brazil, notably how i was mugged in Rio de Janerio. Has anyone been to Salvador and would you recommend it?

well, I was mugged in Salvador. (I had a map but misread it and wandered off into favela territory.) It's actually a rather beautiful colonial town, and I would recommend seeing it - but watch your step.
