Can you travel by canal and river from Bristol to Falkirk and if not, how far north can you get from here?

No. The furthest north you can get is probably Ripon in Yorkshire.

Although the Lancaster canal goes further north, it is cut off from the rest of the system, so Ripon is about your limit.
