Sorry, not sure this should be under 'travel' as such, but does anyone know if hairdryers and straighteners from the uk can be used in the states using the normal travel adaptor? thanks

They will probably work, but not as well - heat up less, fan runs slower and the like. They may well not work well enough to be of use.
hi...
they should do,, but remember they have a different voltage than us.
the r usa 110V we use 240V..

They will work but much slower etc. as pointed out.
My wife says that her hair straighteners are useless in the US, and the hair drier is rubbish there too (except for dual voltage ones which are easily available). Either invest in them, or buy cheap ones when you get there. Saves lugging them over there too!
We have just been to Canada, unable to recharge batteries for cameras & video camera, advised to buy a international converter for appliances converts 110v us electricity to 220v foreign electricity, it cost approx 20 canada dollars, well worth it. Good luck.
