There is also an RAC route planner

I use an internet route planner before every long journey. If you have the post code of the start and stop points it gives an accurate mileage.

It also gives a rough guideline to how long it may take.

On some of them you can also specify if you want to use more motorway, less motorway, or no motorway.
But occasionally you need to use common sense as well. As a trial I planned a route to the Isle of Wight via my favourite Southampton/East Cowes ferry instead of the Portsmouth/Ryde one. I put in Southampton and East Cowes as points on the route. It sent me to Southampton, then Portsmouth, then Ryde and finally back to East Cowes.
