Rights to refund instead of credit note for course

I signed up and paid for an adult community college course online, and immediately having done so, realised that I had stupidly signed up and paid for the wrong course.

As soon as I did this, I sent an email to the college and phoned to say that I needed to transfer to a different course. They said, no problem, but because the course I was being transferred TO, was less money (�90), I would be given a credit note for this amount.

I said I was not happy with a credit note as I cannot utilise this against a course until next year (yada yada yada) and even then I will not be in the country to do this, so I need a refund for the �90. They continually say that this is not their policy to do so.

Do I have rights to demand the �90 refund to my credit card? I obviously have paid �90 for services/goods which I technically haven't received in my opinion!

In a word, no! Without meaning to sound harsh, it was your fault that you booked the wrong course and nothing to do with the college, they are entitled to reissue the difference however they wish, and could well be OK to refuse to do it at all.

Your argument would be that they have had minimal inconvenience changing it over, and that having the �90 in any other way than money is unreasonable, but this is just an argument.

I think they've already been quite obliging by transferring your registration. I don't think they have any obligation to refund your cash, it's your mistake, not theirs.

You signed up to their T&C (no refunds) when you made the original booking.

You MAY be able to find someone who wants to sign up for another course and pay for it for them with your credit with them paying you. OTH there may be something in the T&C that makes this difficult.

yes, you have no rights here, its your mistake and they are already transferring it for you.

i suggest going to them and nicely state your case, and ask if they can somehow transfer it to another student who is about to enrol, or just hang around on enrolment days and approach new students

I think you do have rights. You could argue that it would be unfair for them to swallow your money knowing full well you couldn't embark on another course.

If you recieve substandard online course then you can demand a refund for that. If i were you, id go to the nearest library, seek out a good law book and look up the relevant section. There it will explain your rights, their rights ect ect, then you can make an informed decision.

If not, then just buy another course, you would have given them the money anyway if your course was at that price, you can never have enough education!!!
