Go to http://www.tripadvisor.com and type in Venice.
jay90-I stayed in venice last year and I actually wrote a review of my hotel at the time which was brill and you can read it here:

I hope the link works. Email me: [email protected].
I added pics and other comments to my review, as you can see it is highly recommended.
There is actually a supermarket where you could source stuff for a light lunch tucked away behind the Doges Palace look out for the carrier bags. We did this a couple of times to tide us over to dinner, lovely pic nic spot at the far end of the island in the park. One of my favourite places.
Stopped at the hotel Villa delle Palme last year - a wonderful place on the Lido. Prices vary considerably depending on season, film festival etc.,
but we were there off-season and got a ridiculously cheap rate.
I was expecting to get ripped off at every turn, but was pleasantly suprised how good and affordable the food and drink was in general. (Obviously if you insist on having a cappuccino on St. Mark's Square you deserve to have your house repossessed to foot the bill).
If you get fed up with Italian food, try the Syrian
restaurant Sahara (Cannaregio, 2519). And if you fancy a suckling pig butty and a vino rosso, check out a place just opposite the vaporetto stop for Murano.
Have a good trip.
