It's fab, went with three other ladies, I was gonna put girls then and remembered my age lol....we saw no trouble, no drugs, smelt some though, went to the red light district for a look, didn't find any of it scary, great shopping, great food, lots of bikes and trams, and had a cruise round the canals.
Agree entirely with suzy. I went by myself last October and thoroughly enjoyed it (I'm in my fifties). Late at night just use your common sense as you would in any city and stick to the busier streets.
Great city - love it! Relaxed atmosphere, excellent museums, super food (especially Indonesian and African), lovely people, excellent bars, plenty to do & see. The Red Light District is a tourist area these days, so the only real danger is getting ripped off in a bar. Just exercise the same common sense as you would in any British city and you'll be fine. Enjoy!
I've been loads of time since living there in the early seventies. never once had any problems, just loved it.
