I am in London, England, and I am thinking of ringing up a friend who now lives in Perth (Australia); can anybody tell me how the time difference works as I need to work out at what time I need to ring her (I don't want to wake her up in the middle of the night). Many thanks.

The time in Perth, Australia, is GMT + 8 hours. We in the UK are at GMT + ! hour (British Summer Time). Perth is 7 hours ahead of us. I am typing this at 10.45 p.m. on Thursday UK time, which is 5.45 a.m. on Friday in Perth.

Look at the clock and work out what time it will be in 7 hours' time. That is the time now in Perth. OK?

Just another minor point - Perth/WA does not alter time with daylight saving, so you'll never have to bother with that, at least.
Many sites will tell you the time *right now* in any country/ major cities of the world. For example: http://www.worldtimeserver.com/
Simplest is to call the International Operator on 153 before you make your call - they will give you a time difference anywhere in the world
