If you have a UK passport all you need is a Green Card which you fill out on the plane that last for 3mths I think.

As for finding places to eat, have a look on the net like a US version of Toptable.co.uk.

Im sure there are plenty around.
Ummm... Green Card is the popular name for United States Permanent Resident Card (form I-551) and has nothing to do with travelling to the US as a visitor.

The form graham1024uk alludes to is the I-94(W) of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) used as an alternative means of entry to that of temporary nonimmigrant visas such as B-1 (business) or B-2 (pleasure or medical treatment).
If you have every been arrested then you will need a visa, if not then you just fill out the immigration card on the plane. There are loads of mid-priced restaurants in Manhatten. When I was there last year my friend and I just found one in whatever area of Manhatten we were in at the time, though we did enjoy Mustang Sallys http://www.mustangsallysny.com/
