Is 100% DEET (the ultimate biting insect deterent) safe to use on the skin/face or is it too strong for 'flesh' and for use on 'clothing' only? What is the safe % DEET for direct application to the skin (it is also available in 30% and 50% strengths)...

Although Deet has generally been proven to be safe, some studies do indicate some people have reactions. 100% Deet is available as shown here: http://www.teclabsinc.com/products.cfm?id=3080 CF28-9509-9CE3-187DF4FD9E672FD4, but not usually recommended since it doesn't provide much more lengthy protection that applications of less strength... Even the 100% can be applied to skin...
I was told that 50% was generally as strong as you needed if you're going on holiday. I think that the army use 100%.

I normally get bitten pretty badly and find that 50% does the job!
I've just been to Sub-saharan Africa (Rwanda) and had no probs with 50%. My gf used 100%, she has sensitive skin and was fine too.
