im going on a few day break wit my new boyfriend at the beginning of november and im really excited to be spending the few days together. we are going to amsterdam and iv paid for it for his birthday, its set me back quite a bit but i dont mind cuz he means alot to me. anyway he has mentioned a few times about trying out the 'space cakes' over there from the cafes. i understand that this is only a soft drug but i am completly against drugs and he knows this. does this kind of thing have any side effects? im really not happy about it and have told him but i think he is set on doing it. i dont know what to do because i dont want to moan at him but then again i really dont like the idea oft he man i love taking drugs however soft they are. anyone experienced this kinda thing before?

I personally haven't but I know recently a relative went there (she's 50!) and insisted on trying them out. They just made her feel extremely spaced out (she didn't have many mind). I think it's just because he wants to try them in a place where it's not illegal and you can sit there and have them openly whilst sitting in a place where you could equally order a coffee!
All you can do is tell him you won't be trying them but, as you said, its not fair because of your own beliefs to stop him from trying them, after all it is not illegal over there and, if not overdone, he can say he tried them and enjoyed them!

Haywood - that is ridiculous. Some people are prone to addictions and some aren't. Not everyone is going to go onto harder drugs because they've tried a softer one. It's all down to personality.
It's his birthday, it's his treat, in a way how dare she give him a treat then tell him he's not going to enjoy it the way he wants! After all, Amsterdam is well known as a holiday destination for two reasons, the first one we won't mention and the second one is trying soft drugs, legally!

'ummmm' its not a matter of giving him a break im only concerned cuz i care for him so much so thought id ask for some opinions. its not as if im giving him an ultimatum and its going to spoil our break if he decides to try it. i was initially worried about going over to amsterdam because of its reputation but i have spoken to so many people who have been and said its a beautiful city and as long as you are careful and dont walk around on your own its fine. thanks for the comments guys x

Why don't you let him try it. lets face it, most people have tried it, well, depending on the generation. It does not necessarily lead to 'hard drugs'. I know many people who have smoked draw for years then decided that they wanted to quit, and did successfully, and also people who have smoked it for even longer and they have not progressed to harder drugs. My only advice is to enjoy the holiday and if it happens, it happens, you may even try it yourself. You can just put it down to one of life's experiences.
well i went to amsterdam a year or so ago, hubby was working there. ive never taken drugs but im also the type of person who will try anything once. met him at the airport and dropped bags in the hotel....first port of call....cafe amsterdam...they are everywhere..well, when in rome i thought. anyway, im up for anything and it was a nice change from being wife, mother etc. you have to understand that the really posh folks going to the opera are in there smoking pipes as well as the rest of them. its not over the top at all. very sociable i thought. i smoked all weekend and so did hubby. the only side effects were that you want non stop sex all the time which aint that bad is it!!! let loose, enjoy and come back home to reality. also, folks worried about the red light thingy...i loved it, hubby hated it and thought it was degrading to women...i just thought 'there's a gorgeous woman who has made a choice and i wont judge her'!!! each to their own i say!!! ps..never had a joint since...can i come???
I like the "slightly needy folk" comment. Nice and non specific yes very good..
Anyhoo I have been to Amsterdam several times, sampled the space cakes and other herbal delights and its good fun on an occasional basis, not something that has resulted in me getting addicted or relying on it to get through everyday life. If you do decide to do it, just try a little bit. You will probably get the giggles and feel all light and fluffy. By the following morning you will feel normal again it only lasts a few hours.
Amsterdam is beautiful, lots to see and do, the museums are lovely, canal trip is romantic, good wax museum, Anne Franks is a must see, and wandering through the red light district is fun too. Best cafe is called Babas does great hot chocolate and tasty space cakes. Have a lovely time Amsterdam is a fantastic city

If all he wants to do is try the space cakes then i don't see any harm. Are you against it because you are scared of what could happen or just because you don;t agree with drugs.
in the coffeeshops they are more than happy to give you advice, tell you how long to wait before it kicks in, tell you what it will feel like and generally what to expect. Perhaps you could buy some and take it back to the hotel in the evening and experience it in the comfort of the room.
from what you have said it doesn't sounds like he usually does drugs and just wants to try space cake while he is there. it will just make him a bit spaced out, giggly and dreamsy.... it's really a pleasant experience, doesn't last long and you don't lose control of yourself like some people do on alcohol!

just logged on and read everyones answer. thanks for the comments. mixed replies but majority saying to let him have a try. as i said previously i would never stop him doing it if he wanted to but im just afraid of the effects it will have on him. not so much because im against drugs because in my opinion if people want to do it then its their business but as i say just worrying for his safety. i go on thurs so ill let u all know the outcome. x
