The ferry journey from Cyprus to Alexandria is an overnight trip and you are allotted a cabin so that you can sleep. You then take the train to Cairo when you arrive the following day. I can't recall the costs as they varied according the length of stay in Egypt and the types of cabin - or indeed whether you had one at all. I think some people just snooze in seats. It depends on what you want and are prepared to pay for.
The alternative usually offered is to fly from Larnaca to Cairo. You can just spend just the day there before returning, or you can stay in a hotel for as many days as you choose. We looked at staying in Cairo for a couple of nights before returning to Cyprus and I think that was about 350 pounds each. The day trips are obviously much cheaper.
As I said, we eventually decided to remain in Cyprus as we were touring by car and wanted to see more of the island. However, the prices shouldn't have changed too much.

We went to Cyprus about 3 years ago and went on a mini-cruise to Egypt. Can't remember the price (at a guess about 150 quid each??) but whatever it was, was well worth every penny for the experience. Travelled overnight from Limassol to Port Said arriving at 6am and then coahc trip down to Cairo. Went to museum with Tutankamen's treasures (great, but manic!), then onto Pyramids (Wow!!). Hour cruise down the NIle with lunch included and then a visit to papyrus museum (better than it sounds) Back to the boat in the evening and then cruise back overnight back to Limassol. Although Egypt was scary with armed guards everywhere and the poverty was horrific it was DEFINITELY worth going. Although you are only in Egypt for 1 day, the trip is spread over 3 days and felt like ages so please, please go - you'll love the experience!! lol
