Know this has been touched on, but in the light of the sacked teacher/veil story, your thoughts please! Working for the above mentioned flag carrier, have just received internal mail to state that in light of all bad publicity, BA will now be reviewing it's Uniform Standards Policy, not because they believe them to be out dated, but because of the damage that this is doing to the business! Thoughts so far in the office tonite ..... When u apply for a job in uniform, you accept the way you wear that uniform, or you dont take the job!
Is it necessary to "flaunt" your religious symbol of choice for all to see, surely the closer it is to your skin, the more comfort it brings u?
And when in Rome... wouldn't be able to dress the same in Riyadh as u wud in Ruislip! Your thoughts....? x

Personally I think everyone should just get the hell over it. If someone wants to wear a cross, a veil or whatever happens to be significant to their religion then who cares. It's not like they have 666 tattoed on their forehead so who really cares. If you find someone expressing their religion in the form of a cross, etc offensive, then it's you that needs help, not them.
that wasn't directed at you NinxJay, just a general statement.

Nicely put, Milly! Very fair statement, and I agree wholeheartedly. However, consider the age old conflict between say, arabs and jews. It does seem that some people wear there religion more as a "yeah? wanna make something of it?" kinda badge , than what it is supposed to symbolise!
For God's sake, people (pun completely and utterly intended), this was a health and safety issue...a daft one, but still nothing to do with religion.

"When u apply for a job in uniform, you accept the way you wear that uniform, or you dont take the job!"

'Tis a mighty fine point indeed NixnJay. And basically, no, it isn't necessary to flaunt your religion any more that it's necessary for me to flaunt my genitalia. You choose to do so when it's appropriate.
afraid i don't believe the health and safety thing, or they wouldn't allow people to wear ties or watches or shoes with laces. oh well, all one big fuss over something so petty.
this would never even have been an issue if it wasnt for the ongoing muslim problem this country has, and BA adopting a pathetic PC attitude to cowtow to the muslims that work in our airports
NH...whos'health and whos'safety is at risk?
bazwillrun are you able to provide any evidence that Muslims objected to the wearing of a cross?
johnizere- http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/News/Question32 4399.html ... namely vehelpfulguy's first answer. Not my words. OK, not BA's either, but all the same, this still has nothing to do with religion.

For THECORBYLOON, I can tell you that a search on Google News for the term "Muslims objecting to crucifix" (without quotation marks, by the way, to get a wider search) threw up a grand total of 0 results. Which settles that debate.
not that i had to but i just reread my post and i cant actually see where i said muzzys specifically objected to the cross.

i suggest you read it again, but slowly this time !
bazwillrun you wrote this would never even have been an issue if it wasnt for the ongoing muslim problem this country has, and BA adopting a pathetic PC attitude to cowtow to the muslims that work in our airports

To KOWTOW to someone means to defer to or yield to someones wishes, views or orders.

You implied BA acted in response to objections from Muslim workers.

I ask again, do you have any evidence?

THECORBYLOON- I'm not bazwillrun but I'm telling you again that there ain't any.
NH thanks for the contribution but I'm asking bazwillrun to provide the reasons for his statement. It may well be that upon further consideration, he/she will confirm there is no justification for the remaks made.
Well you are welcome to try it in Ruislip, but we wont have it in Ickenham.
hey tweedledee and tweedledum listen up

Taken from Google

Definitions of kowtow on the Web:

scrape: bend the knees and bow in a servile manner
fawn: try to gain favor by cringing or flattering; "He is always kowtowing to his boss"

I implied nothing. you have decided to interpret in a manner that suits your leftie views.
The fact that you cant find any complaints is totally ireleavent.

BA are towing the PC line so that the hordes of muzzys that work in our aiports cant complain.

If any muzzys are thinking of complaining, well if they dont like it, theyre in the right place to get a flight out of here !
all my life a can recall people in all types of sitiations wearing their crucifixes, why is it now an issue ? pure coincidence that we have over a million muzzys and countless hindus etc. and everybody is scared to upset them, course it is !!!

it never used to be an issue till these people came flooding in here, why cant you people get it into your thick skulls.

dont come here if you dont like what we do or wear
Bazwillrun, I don't give a toss- you're just turning this into a Muslim-bashing event when there isn't one to be had.

The fact that we can't find any complaints might well be whatever the hell that adjective was you were trying to spell, but I assure you it is also very relevant indeed. You're saying we should stop flattering Muslims...I'm saying that they ain't wantin' any of yo damn flattery, mister. It's you that's complaining about how BA are doing things...so why don't you fly out of here? Maybe it's because you'll have to use EasyJet, who when asked to take you to Greece will probably land you in Iran.
To put it into context, this lady had worn it for seven years without it being an issue. It was only after she'd been to a meeting, where they discussed how to treat people of various religions, she asked why other religions were mentioned, but not Christianity.

It was after this, that they told her to hide her cross, before that, it wasn't an issue.

I think she was right in her actions.
"Cowtow" "towing the PC line" "muzzys" "favor" and you dare to call me thick?

If you don't think Muslims complained, why did you mention them?

well, thanx guys! Not quite the debate I anticipated but thanks for ur responses....some (admarlow) cracked me up! Some very valid points, but sadly some very "standard, sweeping statements" Which is either PC gone to the extreme, or more likely, the way the world is today! How proud we can be!!??
