There's usually a button or switch on the back to depress while you change the combination to the new one.
on mine you turn the hook part round and pull it up a bit. So the answer is probably no, no standard way. If in doubt, get a new one; travelling with a lock you don't know how to operate can be a bad idea.
I would leave it on 0000 to lock it, but get a confirmation on this first, that what I did with mine as I am a hopeless case.
Could you not ask the shop you got it from.?
good luck.
0000 is usually the first number baggage thieves try out, for the reasons DeeSa mentions. If you can change it, do.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that, when travelling to the USA, it is advisable NOT to lock your suitcases because, if "they" decide to open them for security purposes, they will break the locks. Consequently, it is better to put a sturdy strap round your cases.

Perhaps somebody will confirm if this is true.
