We are thinking of just turning up at an airport with luggage packed for somewhere hot and seeing what we get. Is this going to be too much hastle and will we really save on our travel costs?
You are very unlikely to save on your travel costs - nearly all last minute flight bookings are super-expensive. They take the view you are desperate to travel and will pay anything.
Charter flights are sometimes an exception - if you can find one with spare seats.
You are probably best off going into a travel agent a few days ahead and seeing what they can offer.
I would not reccomend this, unless you have plenty of money to make sure you end up somewere nice. Otherwise you could end up anywhere if you have a tight budget. I would try expedia, theyre usually great for me. You may get some great last minute deals on there. Its a risk, which you could regret. Then again if you have alot of money you will no doubt end up somewere nice.
Whatever you do when booking last minute, beware of hotel allocated on arrival, get a named hotel and check it out before you pay up.
We once had a self catering last minute deal and the appartments were up a truly steep hill and we struggled with the groceries and the rep laughed and said thats whet you paid for. Also had a grotty hotel, but once in Maderia it was okay but we did pay an upgrade charge.
Good luck.
My understanding is that Airlines couldn't care less whether you fly or not after a certain passenger number. If the number is reached where the plane is proffitable, then,it's full fare or nowt. Much better to book online,I believe there is a favoured time for optimum savings, but not sure how far ahead that is
