Mobile phones and text messaging

Can anyone pinpoint for me when mobile phones (and later on text messaging) began to become as popular as they are today?

Cant give you specific dates but I would say mobiles have been popular with the masses for about 3 1/2 - 4 years (I'm talking kids and the man in the street) and text was not far behind due to the huge bills these people got when they first started using them. So texting the last 2 1/2 years. Thats just my personal opinion.

I'd say about '98-99 with the Nokia 3210. I think that was a lot of peoples' first phone.
