Quite honestly, I'd look at the forecast just before going and plan from that. It can be really wet and windy on the west coast and lovely and sunny on the east. Blair Castle (nothing to do with Tony) is a real must if you're up by Pitlochry which is a lovely town to visit too.
Unless you want to visit edinburgh, forget the east coast. Start at Loch Lomond, head north and bear left through towards inverary and back up to Oban. Roads are beside lochs and mountains - beautiful. You can go across to Mull by ferry and other islands if you wish. Then head for Fort William. A trip to Skye is also recommended. Back up to inverness and down the A9 via Aviemore and Pitlochry. If you want an awsome view take in the funicular railway at the Cairngorms national park just east of Aviemore. Takes you up 3000ft above Loch Morlich with awesome views. Head back down to Pitlochry , Perth and Stirling, then head back down south via Gretna green or Edinburgh.
Everyone just goes to Edinburgh and thinks they've seen Scotland. I would start on the west coast and drive up to Arisaig, then on to Malaig and get the ferry over to Skye. You can then drive back over the Skye bridge, past the stunning Eilean Donnan castle and down to Fort William. Through Glencoe and towards Crianlarich. You've then got Loch Earn and there's a good campsite there as there are all along the route I've mentioned. If you get chance, visit St Andrews in Fife and stop at Artery Gallery in South Street and then have an ice cream at Jannetta's before you travel on down to Edinburgh.
