All good suggestions, but I would add that San Diego is quite compact for its population. However, I would offer that directly across the street from Lindbergh Field (San Diego's airport) is a manmade island that's about a mile long or so. It's called Harbor Island and has perhaps 5 or 8 good hotels at reasonalble prices. From the budget minded Super 8 to the more upscale Hilton and Sheraton inns. It's a beautiful location with a marina within walking distance with some of the finest food in San Diego. The harbor side is used by the U.S. Navy to access the Pacific Ocean and often one sees an aircraft carrier moving in or out of the harbor. At the southwest end is Tom Hams Lighthouse with the absolute best Margaritas in town. It's an easy drive to all points in San Diego. Don't miss Point Loma, Balboa Park or the Star of India as examples...
