Does any one know of a cheap but decent hotel in central London, thinking of planning a weekday mini trip

Go on Tripadvisor website. Within London pages you can select area & star rating you want and find recommendations - or otherwise - from people who stayed in the hotels listed - then check the hotel's website for prices.

Paddington area has loads of cheap hotels & is convenient for getting around. You will often find that hotels offer cheaper deals at weekends when there are no business booking.

Also try travelodge - if you book well in advance they have very cheap rooms available - certainly �26, possibly �15 though the latter offer may not be in central London
