Just passed test in UK - can I drive abroad?

how long do you have to have held a full uk driving licence before you can drive abroad? - specifically USA and Australia/NZ

Legally, you just need the licence.

However you may find that some (not all) hire car companies look for a specific period that you have held the licence - as it will vary it's not possible to generalise.
Spain won't let you hire one for at least 3yrs after you've passed your test. My daughter passed her inSpain but still cannot hire one.
But you can drive a friend's car as long as you are insured and that's the rub, insurance will be very high.
