How to get from Florence to Venice

I am planning a couple of weeks in Venice/Florence in july with my parents and im wondering whats the best way to get from venice-florence or vice versa. I know Alitalia fly for about �78 one way, is it possible to catch a train?

NO. I dont drive. My dad wont drive abroad either.
bear in mind that raileurope are generally expensively priced for the US market - you should find it cheaper than that booked locally

Dzug you are confusing me! You say that RailEurope ar emore expensive yet then go on to say that I should find it cheaper than booking locally!!!

Is it not just ok to buy the ticket on the day before boarding the train? What other choice do I have? Its either railEurope or buy on the day (or day before), right?
If you want to go by train you will need to book it well in advance. Lovely journey on excellent trains and well worth the cost.
Catch the train - Italian trains are good, clean and generally run on time

The main station in Venice is called Santa Lucia - walk out and straight onto the #1 Vaporetto which will take you slowly all the way down the Grand Canal to St Marks Square. One vaporetto trip costs �6 or you can get a 24hr pass for �15

brilliant info auntibertie thanks! BTW I have been to venice 2 summers ago and not once was I asked on board the vaporetto to show my ticket! I did go on it about 20 times and they never did ask!
