me and my son are going to manchester next month the cheapest we can find is 45 pounds return for the day is there anywhere i could get it cheaper cheers
45 seems to be the standard fare. A saver would be about 28, but on some trains getting 2 singles is cheaper, on a random date (12th June) you can do the journey for as little as 8 each way.
this assumes you don't mind delaying your departure until after the peak (?)......
on that day, savers are available on most trains, and a selection of value single tickets (priced from 8, 8-50, 10 & 11 each way) are available on selected trains, eg it's8 on the 07h48 & 08h48 from New Street. check with any of the train ticket websites - I use GNER, http://www.gner.co.uk/GNER
The outbound direct trains at 0648, 0748 and 0848 are currently priced at 12 single. The 0948 and 1048 services are priced at 15, then the fare drops back to 12 at 1148.
The return direct services in the afternoon and evening, at 3 minutes past each hour are all priced at 12.
That's odd! Mushroom25 have checked different sites (which are meant to access a common database) and we've been quoted different fares. Perhaps it's because fares are always updated at 1800 each day. (We might have checked fares on either side of the cut-off).
I suggest checking both sites, to see if you can save money with one of them.
N-Express advertise fares Birmingham-Manchester as "from 5" (each way) - and this fare is available on buses that permit a day return, ie 07h30 out and 19h15 back.
you'd have to balance this against the additional journey time over the train (about an hour) for what is a saving of 6.
